I do not argue either way about reverting now. However, I did and
do suggest this is a useful feature, regardless of what you want
right now. In fact, I think we will see more and more demands for
use-without-installing binaries, and then configuration support
much more flexible than we have now will become mandatory.

A configuration UI in the regular interface with support for multiple
configurations would fix that lack of configuration UI in plugins
handily, if a bit obscurely.
