I haven't yet looked at the benefits of that, but I'd like you to split
the patch into a cosmetics part (renaming the instance pointer, changing
formatting, and so on) and a part that only does what you say it does.

And if you feel like it you could also (in yet anoter separate patch)
use the exception-free error reporting API.
