You might perhaps want to add your own opinions to that discussion...

EPG is electronic program guide, it conveys info about the currently playing
item and program info for next e.g. 7 days. Support for this was in VLC 0.8.6
already so it's *no way* a new feature. In VLC 1.0 it was disabled only for RTP
network streams due to bugs, which were resolved by courmisch and me.
Therefore I *strongly* disagree do disable EPG altogether. Conversion from
ISO6937 to UTF-8 is no rocket science, and the routine is based on glibc code.
There's no point in avoiding it, if you don't believe it works, test yourself.
