Joe Average User will probably just know which satellite (name or degrees)
his dish is pointed at with no knowledge what a transponder is. A drop down
with the relevant information (and a satellite named 'custom' with a hint
for the advanced users where to find the file to edit) would be sufficient.
Even if there are just few transponders listed per satellite - more can be
found while scanning (with option to ignore them) and added (if chosen) to
the local list file. The generated list of channels could/should be
'Play'-able, but not the transponders list - they are 'a hint' where to
obtain the channels.
