OK, I take it back. The plugins, that I thought did not make any
difference, weren't in fact even loading due to a mistake on my part.

What's the final verdict? From the discussion I can see that
introducing a general purpose API for all modules is not considered
the right way to go (which I partially agree with now that I've seen
this discussion evolve). Should I go ahead and post a patch that
implements two simple functions that list all video/audio filters, as
originally proposed by Jean? I guess that would have a minimal impact
on the quality of the API at this moment. On the other hand, if a more
generic API was to be introduced in the future, the two could clash
with each other a bit.
