I've looked into this more, as I did not understand *why* this was necessary.
It appears there's a weird interaction between an installed plugin,
and the in-tree one, with respect to the options. Plugins appear twice
in the options list, though this had never been (AFAICT) a problem
before. Now, though, it appears changing options sometimes does not
take effect, so I ended up seeing a shaded background when I did not
select one, etc. I suppose recompiling the plugin with and without the
postprocessing step was in sync enough with chance option change to
make it display right to seem to match. This all appears to have fixed
itself once I deleted the installed plugin manually.
So, the original code was correct, which is good, because I understand why :D
