I assume your are a Windows user. In that case Windows Vista and Windows 7
provide a Default Programs panel where you can associate programs to certain
protocol (protocols are below file types). Under Windows XP Tools -> Folder
options... (and File types tab) should allow same adjustments.

As you see VLC doesn't associate itself to protocols by default. And there
aren't options for that in VLC.

I have to remind that not all programs respect protocol settings so
adjusting it might not solve your issue.
