Thanks Jean-Baptiste.

Could you point me in the right direction on how to debug the webplugin
then? Maybe someone has created an article already?

I'd really like to fix the fullscreen issue so any help would be greatly
appreciated. Like I said I don't really know how vlc works and it's very
difficult to find any info on the web (even on the dev's page).

oh no!

You are mistaking VLC plugins (loadable modules) and VLC webplugins!
