[vlc-devel] [GSoC] Idea - Eyecandy oriented OpenGL interface

Hello,

The last idea sucked so I came up with a hopefully acceptable one.

I think it would be nice if a flashy eye-candy full of visual effects OpenGL
interface would exist for VLC. Possibly there are a number of users that
would prefer that instead of the current interfaces. I am imagining the type
of thing like those media center applications with things smoothed out and
transparency and glowing and sorts.

This kind of interface should be simpler, with fewer elements. This would
also simplify implementation. There should not be any complex graphical
elements that would pose unnecessary complications. The playlist would be
the most important, and the navigation(?) tree is a must. The playlist items
could be represented by cassetes with the item information nicely arranged
in them. These would move around as the playlist would advance or the user
would scroll through them. Everything should be smooth, nothing should snap
from place to place suddenly.

The overall layout would be like the Qt interface, except there would be no
menus on top. The more important actions from the menus should have their
own buttons somewhere. I could implement some menus that will contain all
the actions, if it is neccessary.

The focus would be on nice looking effects, to give a feel like those
unrealistic interfaces from the movies.

I've played with OpenGL and interfaces in the past and I feel confident that
I can complete an interface with all the non-advanced features working,
during this summer.

Should I proceed on thinking further and making a proposal? Or do I need to
come up with something else?

Best regards,
Casian
