I need the medium type of the MRL _itself_ (file, directory, network,
capture device) and I don't think the playlist nor the service
discovery can provide this information.
Anyway, most of the time when adding a new element in the recent list,
I don't get access to the input item (e.g playlist_AddExt) so I find
myself in trouble here as I need to get the original MRL entered by
the user and at the same time wait for the core to create and process
the input item... I'm not sure that it can be done easily in a fully
understandable way.

I agree but it's only an informative icon it doesn't need to be
perfectly accurate.
