Breaking all the existing build trees with stale cached dependencies and 
making the build slower for everyone? Because the MacOS devs could not be 
bothered to look for a proper fix in 5 years? No thanks.

Seriously, this autotools bug was resolved by Pierre over five years ago. That 
was far more than enough time to write and release a proper fix before the 
short-term hack got out of hand.
