I have no idea what the speex codec is, for that, I believe we are using 
avcodec anyway:

D/vlc     ( 6242): using decoder module "avcodec"

I don't know if that is bad or what, but I find the quality is still 
very great on my phone (no audible artifacts, screeches, skips, or 
anything like that) - very smooth.
