The worst that would happen here (if the server ignored the PAUSE command) is that the data (subtitle stream) would continue to flow, but VLC would just ignore it anyway.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'time out' in this case, but, no.

No, TEARDOWN is definitely wrong here, because - as I said before - many (most?) servers will not allow the stream to be restarted (within the same RTSP session) after it's been torn down.
