The video is coded in H.264 High profile with a level higher (probably
something between 20 and 41) than your VDPAU driver claims to support (9 to
16). So VLC assumes your card cannot decode. This is probably a bug in your
VDPAU driver.
Actually, there is also a bug in the VLC error message. It shows the
maximum level of the GPU instead of the actual level of the video.
It works in mplayer because mplayer does not check the profiles and
levels.
