Why do you think we come out with new versions of the "LIVE555 Streaming Media" code?  Because they fix bugs that were found in previous versions.  How do you know for sure that the old version "works perfectly fine"?  You don't, because (obviously) you don't know as much about the code as I do.

It turns out that there have been *many* bug fixes and improvements that involve our RTSP client support - the part of the code that VLC uses. See our 'changelog' at http://live555.com/liveMedia/public/changelog.txt

Requiring VLC to use *at least* version 2012.05.17 would certainly be improvement (although there have been improvements, since then, that affect RTP/RTCP-over-TCP streaming - a feature that is very popular with VLC users).
