What if you are playing a continuous stream from your dvb tuner? What if
you cannot seek? You are still decoding the movie twice and it is likely
to hinder the normal playback.

VLC already struggles to decode many files on many computers without
having ffmpeg doing the same behind its back.

I agree with Rémi, right now, the most reliable and pragmatic approach is
to embed that as a metadata at muxing time (this will probably need a
new field definition though).
