We prefer LGPL.

What is the ideal way to deal with external libraries for different architectures? Or is an AC_ARG_ENABLE and PKG_CHECK_MODULES (as for linux now) enough and the person who compiles for the architecture needs to get the correct libraries to suit the code in configure.ac?

This is not your problem for now.
Make it work on Linux, and we'll see how to include in contribs...
