The video output can be used with any other decoder module as well. So 
if someone is only interested in formats that are not supported by the 
mmal decoder he could omit build the decoder. Admittedly this is a bit 
hypothetical, though. So we can change it.

I doubt this can be avoided. The buffer is bound to a video output 
instance anyway, so the whole picture can't be valid across multiple 
video output instances.
Maybe Dennis can comment, in case I am missing something here?
