by 3d shutter glasses i think you mean a 3d tv? you need to check for
hdmi unfortunately.

not necessarily, depending on the video resolution you can send two full frames

imho it makes sense to crop the video if it is properly tagged and
played on a non-3d screen
probably though there should be an additional button in the gui that
detects that the video is 3d and allows to switch freely
