by 3d shutter glasses i think you mean a 3d tv? you need to check for
hdmi unfortunately.

imho it makes sense to crop the video if it is properly tagged and
played on a non-3d screen
probably though there should be an additional button in the gui that
detects that the video is 3d and allows to switch freely
