I forgot to mention: I tested on OS X only. 
Also, there are some severe bugs in VLC with the transform filter, most notably the "smearing effect". I think it was introduced in revisions 454654e22bff408c512b279d3e6c2568dd106ec6 or 5b7f672c547e226e4b21ab77ea0fb77290a0000a (patches by Felix Abecassis), although I don't understand what is happening exactly.
