I have a last one question: the current buildsystem with contribs allows
developers to quickly get a 32-bit binary that works while avoiding
chasing exotic libraries not provided by the distros. I wondered whether
it was wise to make contribs work also on 64 bits Linux architecture to
make life easier for packagers who are eager to provide 64 bits vlc
binary snapshoots against not bleeding edge distros?
