I do use mutexes for synchronization; this is orthogonal to the use of
volatile. Like Remi said, volatile has nothing to do with multithreading
per-se.
This is turning into a much bigger issue than it should be.
In any case, I removed the volatile in the latest patch, which has no
measurable effect now (post some refactoring).
