I do not grasp why an application would want to disable the snapshot OSD but 
retain the rest of the OSD messages. This is not really helping me.

I cannot recommend using --no-osd in LibVLC. But I think vlc --no-osd should 
disable the snapshot OSD in VLC proper.

TBH, I don't know why it's not disabled by default in external apps.
