Absolutely. I also reported this problem to a maintainer.

However, meanwhile, this workaround prevents VLC from being broken.

I don't know what you mean by build system exactly. But I think, good
build system should consider broken functions of a system. The reason
why configure script exists, is this.

Finally, this patch has some problem ?
