All data is merged back into the .appdata.xml file...

so the process now is:
configure puts @VERSION@ into appdata.xml.in.in and writes
appata.xml.in
translations are injected based on gettext and appdata.xml being
written

All translations need to be inside the .appdata.xml, as this is the
only place Software Centers (based on AppStream) look for it.
