Then, I guess, it's game over.

This is a bit sad, since this an annoying bug that is there since years,
and I hoped a way around could be found.

I'm out of ideas for now, and I do suspect that a more complete refactoring
might be needed in the core code.

So I guess I will give up, except if someone picks up on the idea and give
me hints on how to iterate on this patch.
