In my reality, this is the explanation that I first sent:

"The stereo mode variable was specifically added to replace the earlier non-
persistent non-CLI setting for stereo inputs. Adding surround outpout for 
stereo input does not seem to make much sense."

And it sure does not read like "this is wrong", nor does it look like a 
refusal to explain. I also was not the person to reject external references to 
the commit logs and Trac.
