This patch was sent a month ago for review, IIRC. You're a bit late to the party to review it now.

Anyway, the problem is not -1. On video closing, the GUI can do whatever it wants and not involve the core. On video opening, it must (try to) use the size requested by the core, and then report the actual size. This will never be -1.
