It is more than a little different. The current MFT plugin allows for proprietary implementation of known existing codings. For all or almost all of them, we already have at least one open source implementation. Support for  arbitrary FOURCCs means entirely new codings.

There is also a potential safety/security hazard here, as this may cause conflicting FOURCCs reservation, I guess.
