Sorry, but what it was for is totally irrelevant for the future.
A way to set the output is very often requested, since the removal of the device mode that allowed to change the way it is outputted.
This allow to decide how you want the audio to be outputted, depending on both the device and the current track.

Also, having 5.1 output for stereo is quite often requested, as with dolby prologic and similar technologies.

I'm sorry, but your objection is too vague and needs more arguments.
