VLC was always unable to play any remote media via a fuse mount. Every other players can.
At my home, I'm not even able to play a 720p file via WIFI without this patch. Yes,  I have a normal (crappy) WIFI router, like most people (Router from our FAI).

I can speak for Debian stable/testing with gnome: mounted file systems don't work like a local one: it is very slow.

How ? Such formats are playable remotely.
