You don't need an std::function for this, just pass "&ixmlDocument_free" as deleter, and specifiy the deleter type as a function pointer taking an IXML_Document

You could even get rid of the error label by enclosing p_sys in a unique_ptr, and assign it only in the success path using std::unique_ptr::release (which only releases the ownership of the unique_ptr, not the pointer itself), and just returning the error directly in failure path.
