Then we probably wouldn't end up using the function at all...

One could make the test more robust by first checking for that, but it 
makes things a bit more messy. I just checked on one compiler I had lying 
around, and it's supported in GCC 4.5 at least, so shouldn't be much of an 
issue for the currently supported mingw compilers.
