How else should it be done? Maybe I misunderstood something but
we do not need those functions on some OSes like Windows or OS/2,
do we? So doing it unconditionally would causes compilation errors
on those platforms, when they lack the functions but do not have a
compat replacement?

Regarding the test, is there some way to only compile it when the
compat function it tests is actually compiled?
