How so? Lua script bindings (mostly) keep that in the item's URL
metadata. I don't think this metadata field is necessarily meant to be a
functional location though, so it would seem like a bit of a stretch to
use it as such in the playlist core.

Well it does come with all the lines of a separate script. Rémi himself
said that MPV used another approach. I just brought up some reasons.

No I didn't mean using that, I meant the youtube-dl binary writing the
downloaded stream to a pipe, and reading that pipe from the VLC access
module.
