would suggest looking at how https://code.videolan.org/videolan/dav1d is
currently pulling checkasm into the project with its meson build system and
try and do something similar with VideoLAN's meson buildsystem.

But before that, can you confirm that you:
- have a gitlab account for code.videolan.org and are able to fork the vlc
repo?
- are able to build VLC?

Hopefully you'll hear from JBK soon but this should be enough to get you
started.
