Make Error - Invalid for paddw

Brand new - read about you in OMS & decided to try.
Make producing the following error and don't know how to resolve this!

My system:
PII 400Mhz, 192Mb ram, 1024x768 resolution
RH 7.0,  Kernel-2.2.16-22, XFree864.01a
glibc-devel-2.1.94-3, glibc-2.1.94-3
gdk-pixbuf-0.9.0-0_helix_2, gdk-pixbuf-devel-0.9.0-0_helix_2
SDL-1.1.6
ncurses-5.1-2, ncurses-devel-5.1-2, ncurses4-5.0-2
ggi-2.0b2.1-1

Configure does not work with any options enabled, 
	./configure --enable-mmx --enable-ppro, --enable-other_feature(s)
only ./configure will work
 

otherwise make produces these errors
/tmp/ccoGGkRf.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccoGGkRf.s:165: Error: suffix or operands invalid for `paddw'

Error continues with same message to /tmp/ccoGGkRF.s:3201

Can someone advise?
Also, there does not seem to be a make uninstall; how, do I remove program to 
do clean compile?
