Since that was also on an Inspiron 4000, and my unexpected asyncs were
also on an I4000, I'd guess that's more than a coincidence. Are there
other laptops that use the Rage 128 Mobility chip, and if so do they
experience it too? Anyone know?

Anything particularly useful you'd like out of gdb other than a stack
trace?
