dvd help

i'm having trouble getting dvd playback. i'm probably missing something
silly. here goes.

compiled without a hitch. mpeg playback works great. sound, fullscreen,
everything. dvd playback doesn't work though.

when i select open disk, it places /dev/dvd in the playlist. i press
play and vlc -vvv at this point spits out something like:

unlocking ... 
locking ...

and sits there. i let it sit there for a *long* time, so the faq
suggestion that it may be cracking the key doesn't make sense. also,
i never see/hear drive activity.

dvd ioctls look ok, i think, since i can mount /dev/dvd and browse around.

/dev/dvd -> /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc is mode 666

linux kernel 2.4.4 (could this be the problem? i noticed that the web
site said 2.4.1 has issues. i don't want to do a 20mb+ download unless
i have to though, as i am on a 28.8 modem).

xfree 4.0.1

vlc 0.2.28

i think this is all the info i have.

any suggestions would be much appreciated.
