   If you compiled vlc from the FreeBSD ports tree, it should have
built the gtk.so GUI module. Can you check there is a gtk.so file in
/usr/local/lib/videolan/vlc ? If there is, try to run vlc with the
`-vvvv' flag to get debug messages and see why it couldn't load the
gtk interface.
