taking screenshots with vlc

i've been lurking on the vlc list for some time now.  many thanks to
the authors of vlc.  but i've been wondering lately if it is possible
to take high-rez screenshots of video frames using vlc.  i'd like to
get some high quality stills off a few of my dvds.  everytime i try to
use a screenshot tool to do this it just turns out blue where vlc is.  

i know the latest xine has this functionality built into it.  can
anyone suggest another way of doing this?  i'd like to avoid xine if
possible.  thanks.
