Well... actually, de-graying wouldn't help, since this function is not
implented yet :-(

Playing dvds (even encrypted ones) works from the command line.
Open a terminal, and change to the directory where your vlc.app is located.
Then do:
./vlc.app/Contents/MacOSX/vlc dvd:/dev/rdisk1   (could also be rdisk2 or 3)
