How to turn plugin support off?

Well, it says:
vout: YUV acceleration unavailable !
Then the display goes black except for a small square.
I guess it's because I have a Voodoo 
or because I disabled most plugins.

vlc isn't as nice but has stuff like audio/video 
synchronization, network input, fast forward, seeking.

Seeking! Very impressive. Much better than Xine.

But the main problem is that I get lots of horizontal 
stripes when there's fast motion. Is it less noticeable 
with acceleration? 

What's the difference between the --overlay switch, which
is said to give an accelerated display in the help, and
the y key?
