As Arnaud said, this i due to a nvidia bug.

I'd just like to add that sometimes, switching to hard YUV mode just
blanks the main window. In such case, you just have to resize it, or
move it a little bit, so that I don't know what happens, and the overlay
begins to work.

This is due to an SDL bug, not a vlc bug, and should be avoided as soon as
a Xvideo outpu module is written.
