choppy playback

DVD: heat, r2

video playback is very choppy, as if it's only showing every 2nd or 3rd
frame. there are no "dropped frame" warnings, however. audio is fine.
other DVDs are fine (at least the few I've tested).

system: athlon 550, 256 mb ram, 2.4.1 kernel, geforce graphics card.
the playback doesn't get any better or worse with or without hardware
acceleration.
