New kernel & no sound

Just in case arts is creating this problem, could you try to exit kde and 
Xwindow and just use a plain linux console. Check also that arts has been 
killed.
Then you can use "vlc --novideo nameofyourfile".
If you have sound here then you will have to tweak arts a little bit.
