Subtitle colours and segfaults

Hi,
I'm having trouble with the subtitles on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
(region 4). They're displayed as grey text with white edges. I don't think
this is the way the subtitles could've been intended to be shown because I
can't even read them sitting right in front of the tv.
Is it possible to change the colours of the subtitles or am I stuck with
this?

Also when english subtitles are switched on and I'm watching chapter 6, it
segfaults:
