vlc slowdown

Hello everyone
I have little question about vlc performance.
When i play a dvd movie it does it excelent for about 300-350 seconds. 
then performance drops (every couple frames). it get fixed if i create 
any keyboard input (f key for example).
originally i thought it may be a screensaver or dpms but after i 
disabled them it was still doing it
output of:xset q
....
Screen Saver:
   prefer blanking:  no    allow exposures:  no
   timeout:  0    cycle:  600
....
DPMS (Energy Star):
   Standby: 0    Suspend: 0    Off: 0
   DPMS is Disabled

Does anybody knows what could cause that performance drop?
i'm running debian unstable with nvidia tnt card (v.  1.0.1251) and 
x4.0.3, vlc version 0.2.80, kernel 2.4.5
