2.0.81 problems with RH 7.1

I'm running VLC on a dual-processor (P3/800) box with a half-gig of RAM,
running RH-7.1, a 2.4.x SMP kernel, XFree86 4.0.3.  DRI is enabled.  For
video hardware, I'm running a Voodoo-3--a little old, yes, but it serves
my needs perfectly well.

VLC does not want to work on my system.  Giving the command line

[rjhansen at Numbers vlc-0.2.81]$ ./vlc -v --intf gnome &

gives the following output:
