i didnt do anything special... just use the freebsd pcm drivers instead of the 
commercial OSS, and everything went much smoother.
i simply run "vlc", change to xvideo in the menu and thats it. maybe you have 
dma disabled for atapi ? you need to put 'hw.ata.atapi_dma="1"' into 
/boot/loader.conf to enable it.

http://www.geocities.com/captain_css/ for the xine plugin (it works with the 
new rc3 too, but skipping doesnt work as nicely as with vlc). i think i had 
some minor issues compiling it, but iirc it was just some includes being 
wrong...
